What does the law say about the annual return?
Section 132 of the Income Tax Ordinance provides that the annual return is to be delivered to the assessing officer no later than 30 April each year, for the tax year that has ended.
An individual or a body of persons required to file an online return files by 31 May after the tax year, as does anyone whose return is based on double-entry bookkeeping.
What are the deadlines for tax year 2025?
The Tax Authority extended the deadlines for tax year 2025: individuals not required to file online file by 29 May 2026, individuals required to file online by 30 June 2026, and companies by 31 July 2026.
Clients of representatives, such as tax advisors and accountants, have a separate extension arrangement: for tax year 2025 it runs in stages to 28 February 2027 for individuals and to 31 March 2027 for companies, by quotas of returns the representative must file by each date.
The Tax Authority announces the deadlines afresh every year, so for any other tax year that year’s announcement is what applies.
Is there a deadline earlier than the annual return?
Yes. Under section 91(d) of the Ordinance, a person who sold an asset files a report with the assessing officer within 30 days of the sale, setting out the calculation of the capital gain or loss and of the tax, and pays an advance equal to the tax on the gain.
According to the Tax Authority’s Q&A, a sale of digital assets is reported on form 1399(י), and all of a month’s transactions can be grouped and reported as one.
A person without an income tax file opens one and states that it is for reporting sales of digital assets. A file of type 93 is then opened, which carries no obligation to pay or report advances and no capital declaration.
What happens if you file late?
Under section 188 of the Ordinance, a person who did not file an annual return on time is fined for each month of delay.
An advance not paid on time, or paid at less than the tax due, carries indexation differences and interest from the end of the 30 days until the day of payment, under section 91(d)(3).
A capital loss also carries forward to later years only if a return was filed for the year it arose, so a return for a losing year is worth filing too.
How does Crypto Tax help you meet the deadlines?
Crypto Tax generates a capital gains report for a tax year at any time once the data is imported, so it can be prepared as soon as the year ends rather than close to the filing deadline.
If more data is added after the report is generated, that year’s report can be generated again at no extra cost.
